Barclays Center Information

The Barclays Center is located at 620 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, NY, 11217, at the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues. The arena was named after the banking group Barclays on January 18, 2007. It officially opened its doors on September 21, 2012, with a grand opening concert by Jay-Z on September 28, 2012.

The Barclays Center is owned by New York State’s Empire State Development Authority. Currently, it is leased by Brooklyn Event Center LLC, owned by Brooklyn Nets owner Joseph Tsai. As part of the Pacific Park site, it’s an almost $5 billion business and residential project aimed to provide massive economic development to the Prospect Heights area.

Today, Barclays Center is the home venue for the Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and the New York Liberty (WNBA). The arena hosts a massive range of events year-round — including concerts, family shows, and comedy. Thanks to the surrounding blocks and on-site concessions, you can enjoy some of the best food and drink offerings that Brooklyn has to offer during your visit.

The Barclays Center history

Construction of the Barclays Center began with a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2010. The structure was completed in 2012, and the arena officially opened on September 21, 2012, with a concert by local superstar Jay-Z.

Barclays Bank secured the naming rights for the arena in 2007 through a 20-year agreement valued at $400 million. It immediately became the home for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

In 2015, the New York Islanders NHL team relocated to the Barclays Center. However, the arena, designed primarily for basketball, suffered from poor hockey sightlines and reduced seating capacity. The Islanders left for a different stadium in 2021.

In 2019, Joe Tsai completed his acquisition of full ownership of the Brooklyn Nets and the arena. He also purchased the WNBA’s New York Liberty, relocating the team to Barclays Center in 2020. With these two popular sports teams and regular world-class concerts, the Barclays Center continues to be one of the most popular entertainment venues in New York City.
